Environmental Art
Cohesive, playable environments that support gameplay, narrative, and performance.
Environmental storytelling is one of the most critical, yet often overlooked aspects of modern video games. I bring a critical eye and a skilled hand to fleshing out environments from concept to final shipping product. I can create and iterate on concept art quickly, create assets with industry-quality topology, UVs, and textures, and set dress by hand and using procedural tools like Unreal Engine's PCG system. I'm familiar with working with both stylized and realistic, scan-based workflows, and I take into account everything I know about lighting, color, and space as an artist to craft environments that feel compelling, imaginative, and real. Environmental artwork is another avenue that really pushes me to learn about the world. That includes gathering references for everything, but also chasing the "why" of everything around me; why does this kind of architecture exist? How do the cultural values of this group of people affect how they might organize a house? What are the environmental conditions that led to the creation of this ecosystem? I use these details to inform both myself and my work, and I'm constantly building my internal library of knowledge to take forward with me from every project.
